As the 125th Ohio, we portray to the best of our abilities the men of this regiment. These men were on campaign most of the time, and consequently were dirty, tired, and very worn looking.
These men were in the western theater of operations, and were dressed just like any other soldier in the western theater. Our main goal is to achieve that plain nondescript period "look".

Manual of Arms Clothing
  • Hat: This is what makes or breaks your appearance as a soldier. Make sure you get a good one.
Either a Federal Issue Dress Hat (hardee hat), or a civilian style black slouch hat.
All Hats must be made of correct construction, pattern, and material.

  • Jacket: Mostly we will be using Fatigue Blouses (sack coats) JT Martin Pattern, with the exception of a few Roundabouts. Consult your NCO’s and High Privates if you’re unsure. All coats and jackets must be made of correct construction, pattern, and material.

  • Trousers: Trousers will be federal sky blue kersey wool, of the correct construction, pattern, and material.

  • Shirts: Shirts must be made of correct pattern, construction, and material. We STRONGLY encourage every one to eventually obtain a correct Federal issue shirt. Your second option will be a civilian style shirt of a 100% cotton weave. NO WHITE MUSLIN SUTLER SHIRTS.

  • Shoes: Jefferson Style Federal Issue Booties (brogans). All Shoes must be made of proper construction, pattern, and material. NO MODERN WORK SHOES OR BOOTS!

  • Socks: 100% cotton or wool hand knit socks. Socks must be made of proper construction, pattern, and material.

Equipment
  • Leathers: All Leather equipment must be made of proper construction, pattern, and material. Cartridge Box .58 cal. Cap Box, Bayonet Scabbard (two-rivet pattern), and belt to be made of black stained leather.

  • Haversack: Federal tarred issue haversacks only. A select few NCO’s and high privates will be allowed to use the Ohio State issue pattern white haversack. This will be only a hand full of people, and not the majority. All haversacks must be made of proper construction, pattern, and material.

  • Canteen: Federal issue canteens only. NO confederate or blue wool colored canteens. The federal "smooth side" or the "bulls eye" patterns are allowed. No jack chain attachment for the stopper. Must be correct linen or cotton string. If you have a cover it must be made of correct jeans clothe or flannel. All canteens must be made of correct construction, pattern, and material.

  • Ground Cloth: Federal issue gum blankets or oilcloths made with correct sized grommets and coating. All ground cloths are to be made of correct construction, pattern, and material.

  • Blanket: Federal issue blankets made of 100% wool only. Hand stitched US in the center, and one two-inch end stripe at each end. A select few other styles are expectable. Consult your NCO’s and High Privates. All blankets must be made of proper construction, pattern, and material.

  • Knapsacks: Federal issue double bag knapsack will be our first choice, but federal issue single bag knapsacks are allowed too. All knapsacks are to be made of proper construction, pattern, and material.

  • Personal effects: These are the individual items that make the soldier an individual. Newspapers, letters, nightcaps, cards and dice, tooth brush, and pictures are allowed. All personal items must be made of proper construction, pattern, and materials.

  • Rations: Salt pork, hardtack, coffee, and foraged items issued by, Commissary Sargent Saville.

  • Mess Gear: All mess gear will be made of proper construction, pattern, and materials. A boiler, canteen half, and fork and spoon, should be all you need.

  • Fire Arms: All firearms will be made of proper construction, patter, and material. 1861 or 42 Springfield will be our fist choice. Private or British contract Enfield’s are our second choice. 1816, and Lorenz pattern muskets, are also allowed. NO TWO BAND MUSKETS OR "FRONTEARSE MAN" RIFLES.

All of the above listed items are important for your impression of the western theater soldier. Our main goal is to look like the average soldier.
